our short-term memory

"When we had Rwanda, almost everyone said we should not let it happen again. So we have a big challenge in Sudan." ~Kofi Annan

CBC reported today on a speech the UN Secretary General gave about the current situation in Sudan. How do we manage to forget everything that happened in Rwanda so quickly?

One of my collegues in the MA program and and I were talking about her interest in doing a project surrounding how governments communicate about issues of genocide or rather how they are not speaking about these atrocities. I was thinking about this today, why is it that we know what is happening in Darfur but manage to put it on the back burner while thousands of people are being displaced from their homes and killed.

This has been happening for THREE YEARS people and still our governments do nothing! What is wrong with this picture?

i beg your pardon?

this article has just ticked me off tonight.

the campaigning senator seems to think that canada's armed forces are 'not busy' and can deal with the escalating problem in north korea.

mr. senator can i remind you that our armed forces currently are cleaning up the mess that you left in afghanistan. remember? you dropped bombs there in 2001 and really pissed off the locals?

that said it's not like canadian politicians haven't bashed the u.s. before, we all remember a delightful carolyn parish being kicked out of the liberal party for making fun of good ole gwb. heck even i yankee-bash a little too often.

i try to remind myself that a good neighbour rises above it (aka talks about them behind their back allthewhile being envious of their nicer living room set.)

in other news conservatives douche with pine-sol

i swear, just when you thought we could stop arguing about this issue:

Tories to introduce gay marriage motion

Mr. Harper, don't make me put my purse down and come over there.

Thankfully its largely expected that this will be rejected by the House of Commons, but seriously, gay marriage was just so 2005. Why can't its opponents just move on and face it, we dirty homos won and we did it whilst wearing fabulous shoes.

pirates vs. ninjas

i'm sorry but whoever thinks that pirates would beat ninjas in a global fight to the death is clearly retarded and we can no longer be friends.

let's compare the two groups:

pirates: a bunch of middle aged drunk old men with no depth perception (eye patches) and peg-legs

ninjas: a bunch of highly trained assassins who can get in and out without ever being seen. not to mention ninja stars and that really cool outfit and smoke bombs.

sorry pirates but i am clearly on team ninja.
